Surprise visit to EcoTec bicycle program

The bicycle program at EcoTec S.A. had a surprise visit from a group of North Americans travelling through Nicaragua. John Alexander had worked with Pedals for Progress founder David Schweidenback as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador many years ago and insisted that the group make a detour to see their activities in Jinotepe. They enthusiastically toured the warehouse and offices of this P4P sustainable partner and left convinced of the value of this bicycle recycling program.

Columbian recommendations about earth construction presented at International Round Table

The director of the Group for Investigations of Structures and Materials of the Columbian School of Engineering “Julio Gravito” contributed significant information about earth construction at the International Round Table about Adobe Norms held in Nicaragua in March 2007. The information presented by Doctor Jairo Uribe Escamilla about the experiences in Columbia can serve as a guide for establishment of seismic and technical norms for this type of construction in countries where guidelines of this nature do not exist.

Professional women abound at the seat of the EcoSouth Network in Nicaragua

It's the presence of women that stands out upon entering the EcoSur headquarters in Nicaragua - engineers, architects, ecologists, administrators, psychologists, accountants. The three organizations are enriched by their professional presence, whether development projects with SofoNic, architectural design with EcoTec, construction of homes with EcoNic. They are as comfortable with a computer as in field and carry out their work with enthusiasm and seriousness. Most are under thirty years of age and some are mothers of small children. The next issues of the e-magazine will focus upon the work of these organizations from the perspective of their professional women.
